Content With Such Things

Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

The reason for contentment in this verse is not what you would expect. It is not because you have enough. It is for he hath said, I will never leave thee.

That is a strange foundation until you think about it. Discontent is rarely about the item. It is about security — the belief that one more thing would finally make us safe. The writer cuts underneath that: your security is not a possession, it is a Person who has promised not to go anywhere.

Such things as ye have is deliberately unimpressive language. Not the abundance you deserve. What is actually in your hand right now. Contentment does not wait for a better inventory.

Look at what you have today that you once prayed hard for. It arrived, you enjoyed it briefly, and the wanting moved on to something else. That is worth noticing before another year goes the same way.
