Two Masters

Matthew 6:24 (KJV)

No man can serve two masters… Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Jesus does not say it is difficult to serve two masters. He says no man can. It is not hard; it is impossible, like walking in two directions at once.

We try anyway, because we imagine a middle position where God has our devotion and money has our decisions. But a master is not who you praise. A master is who you obey when the two disagree — and the moments when they disagree are the only moments that reveal anything.

Notice that Jesus calls money mammon, a name, as if it were a person. That is deliberate. Money does not sit quietly in a drawer; it makes demands, offers security, and slowly asks for the throne. It is a very good servant and a cruel god.

There is a decision in front of you where honesty or generosity costs something. How you decide is your answer, whatever you would say in a survey.
