Doers, Not Only Hearers
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
The warning in this verse is sharper than we usually notice: deceiving your own selves. Hearing without doing does not leave you neutral. It leaves you fooled.
Here is how the deception works. Hearing a good word produces a real feeling — conviction, inspiration, agreement. The feeling is so similar to change that we mistake it for change. We walk away sure that something happened, and nothing did. Repeat that for a few years and you get a well-taught believer with an untransformed life.
Say it in the plainest way: information is not formation. You do not lack teaching. Most of us are carrying more truth than we have obeyed.
So do not look for a new word today. Look for the last one. There is something you already know, sitting in your mind waiting for a body. Give it one.
Prayer: Lord, close the gap between what I know and what I do.
Today’s action: Take the last thing God clearly showed you and do one concrete part of it today.
What do you already know that you have not yet done?
