Do Not Stand on One Leg

Ecclesiastes 11:2 (KJV)

Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

Solomon gives a reason for spreading things out, and it is refreshingly honest: thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. Not pessimism — humility about the future.

One job. One customer. One crop. One person who brings in everything. It works beautifully until the day it does not, and then a whole household falls at once. Depending on a single source is not faith; usually it is just what happened, and nobody thought to change it.

This is not a call to scatter yourself thin across ten unfinished projects. Seven or eight portions still means portions of something real. It means the strong thing you have should not be the only thing you have.

Start small and start now, while the main thing is still working. A second stream begun in a good season is a bridge; begun in a crisis it is a scramble.
