Honour Him With the First

Proverbs 3:9 (KJV)

Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.

Honour. That is the word this verse uses about money, and it settles the question of what giving is for. Giving is not a tax. It is a way of showing respect.

We honour what we put first. Everybody knows this instinctively — you serve the important guest first, you pay the debt you fear first, you answer the message from the person who matters first. Order reveals value more honestly than words do.

Firstfruits were not the leftovers of harvest, and they were not the biggest portion either. They were the earliest — brought in before the farmer knew how the rest of the season would go. That is the risk in it, and the honour.

Look at the order of your spending this month. Not the amount. The order. It is telling you something about who you are honouring, and it is worth being honest about the answer.
