The Bag With Holes

Haggai 1:6 (KJV)

Ye have sown much, and bring in little… and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

This is one of the most modern-sounding verses in the Bible. You work. Money comes in. It disappears, and you cannot say where. A bag with holes.

Notice that the problem is not income — they earneth wages. The problem is that nothing stays. Most household money trouble is like this. Not one dramatic loss but a hundred small openings: subscriptions nobody uses, transport that was never planned, food bought twice because the first lot spoiled, interest on a debt that never shrinks, small daily comforts that feel like nothing and add up to a salary.

Holes are hard to see because each one is small. They only become visible when you write them all down in one place, which is exactly why we avoid doing it.

Spend twenty minutes today finding your holes. You will probably find enough to change your month, without earning one extra franc.
