The Field Before the House

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

This is one of the most practical verses in the Bible about money, and it is simply about order. Field first. House second.

The field is where income comes from — the farm, the skill, the business, the work. The house is where the money goes — comfort, furniture, the things people can see. Both are good. But when the house comes first, the house eats the field.

We have all watched it happen. Somebody gets a small breakthrough and immediately upgrades everything around them. The lifestyle rises to meet the income exactly, so nothing is left to strengthen the source. Then the season turns, and there is a beautiful house standing on an empty field.

Build the thing that produces before you build the thing that consumes. It is slower, it is less impressive to watch, and it is the only order that lasts.
