The Witness Inside You

Romans 8:16 (KJV)

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

There are two witnesses in this verse, and they agree. The Spirit itself and our spirit. God does not only tell you that you belong to Him; He confirms it inside you.

This matters because there is another voice, and it is very familiar. It lists your failures. It reminds you of last week. It says that people who really belong to God do not struggle the way you do. It sounds reasonable, and it never once sounds like Jesus.

Learn to tell the two apart. The Spirit convicts about a specific thing you can put right, and He leaves you facing God. The accuser condemns the whole of you about nothing you can act on, and leaves you hiding.

When the accusing voice starts today, do not argue with it in your head. Answer it with what the Spirit has already witnessed: you are a child of God.
