There Is Oil in the House

Proverbs 21:20 (KJV)

There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

The difference between the wise and the foolish here is not income. It is what is left in the house. One has treasure and oil stored. The other spendeth it up.

Spending it up is not usually one big mistake. It is many small ones with no plan behind them. Money arrives and immediately meets a long queue of wants, and by the time the real needs come, the money is gone. Nothing was stolen. It simply had no instruction.

Wisdom in this verse is boring and powerful: keep something. Not everything. Something. The wise person decides what stays before deciding what goes. That single reversal — save first, then live — changes a household within a year.

You do not need a big salary to start. You need a rule. Decide today what percentage never leaves the house, and defend it like it is oil for a lamp, because that is exactly what it is.

Prayer: Lord, give me the discipline to keep something, so my family is never caught empty.

Today’s action: Move a small amount into savings today — before anything else is spent from it.

Is there anything left in your house at the end of the month, or does it all go?
